The flash came again and again. In the middle of a busy street, at the bottom of a deep stairwell, and, most memorably, inside the tiger pen at the zoo. She tried to get to them each time, but she never wound up anywhere close by the time the flash disappeared. It left her all the more determined to get to the world beyond.

J.M. Rhineheart lives in Virginia with her husband and daughter, where she also teaches English and music. She has been published in several anthologies, including The Devil You Know and Rowan & Oak. When she’s not writing, she loves exploring National Parks and playing the violin. You can find her at her website or on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Story Notes: When I wrote this, I thought about chances: specifically, last chances, the kind you’re desperate to do anything for. What would you do to see a missed loved one again? I was also inspired by tales of faeries who will grant any wish you desire…for a price. So this story came out, a mix of so many different ideas, and I wasn’t sure what to even do with it. Thankfully two friends from my writing groups looked it over and gave me the nudge to bring the story to what it is today.
