Jamie D. Munro Break Through
Jamie D. Munro is our number one fan, first Patreon Supporter, Kickstarter supporter, and our Editorial Assistant too! It seems Jamie found us the minute we came online and sometimes I think he understands our mission better than we do. That’s why he became our initial First Line Reader and now our official Editorial Assistant too. Jamie is an aspiring speculative fiction author from Western Australia. _____________________________________________________ "Break Through" was written as a story of hope against the climate crisis in a near-future, rural Australian setting. The first version was written to 1500 words in order to fit within the outer limit of flash fiction. However, feedback and later self-analysis revealed a need to expand the story in order to give more depth to the protagonist's problems, being the climate crisis and misogyny. _____________________________________________________ The word count was nearly doubled in the following version. The beginning was greatly expanded by including a new opening scene which provided further insights into the effects of the climate crisis on the environment and the family's livelihood, the story went deeper into the toxic father-daughter relationship, and the science was expanded with the smartglasses. The denouement was extended to make it more fulfilling and less abrupt. Additional snippets of narrative, description, dialogue, action, and internal thoughts were added throughout the whole story to provide clarity, richness, emotion, or depth as needed.
